TOWN OF SAUGERTIES RESOLUTION OPPOSING CASINO GAMBLING WHEREAS,
the New York State Constitution prohibits casino gambling; and WHEREAS,
the Town of Saugerties is a Greenway community dedicated to protecting its rich
environmental and historic assets and protecting and preserving its quality
of life for its inhabitants and visitors; and WHEREAS,
Saugerties has been proposed as the site for a gambling casino on the Winston
Farm that will irreparably change the nature of our community and will create
negative socio-economic conditions that will place undo burden on the Town,
its residents and businesses; and WHEREAS, the Town of Saugerties
is determined to prevent the siting of a gambling casino within its borders,
including those of our school district, and is resolute in conveying this
determination to our elected county, state and federal representatives; and WHEREAS, the Saugerties Town
Board adopted a resolution on June 8, 2005 opposing the establishment of a casino
in our community and now wishes to re-affirm its opposition for the benefit
of the new Governor and State Legislature; it is hereby RESOLVED
that on this date, January 3, 2007, the Town Board of Saugerties opposes the
siting of a gambling casino in Saugerties or its environs and asks the
Governor of New York State and the State Legislature to decline to enter into
any agreement that would allow the acquisition of property in this Town for
the purpose of building a gambling casino; and it is further RESOLVED
that this Resolution be forwarded immediately by the Town Clerk to New York
State Governor Eliot Spitzer and all State Legislative leaders considering
expansion of casino gambling into the Town of Saugerties and to our elected
representatives on the federal, state, county and local levels. Roll
